Tuna

TUNA CAMONIANA “In Vino Veritas”, the students’ musical band from Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa “Luís Vaz de Camões”, was founded on 21 January 1992, in the restaurant“Adega Alcafache”.

All band members (“tunos”) adopted, as their model, the poet Luís Vaz de Camões and his motto “Na Verve Virtuosos, Na Estroina Espantosos” (great in creativity, amazing at partying).

Tuna Camoniana has opted for playing originals inspired by academic life, good humour and the city of Lisbon, having released three CDs thus far. A CD entitled “In Vino Veritas” and a CD single, both with originals only, and a CD on the poem The Lusíads, entitled “Epopeia”, written with musicians Fernando Tordo and Manuel Freire, and including songs by other musicians considered adequate to the themed show.

Tuna Camoniana has appeared in many TV shows and had the comedian Herman José as its patron.

The band has participated in many festivals in Portugal, as well as in the “Tunas” Festival in Conceptión, in Chile, and has won several prizes.

It has also made several shows throughout the country, including in the Azores and in Madeira, and in the radio Christmas show, Gala de Natal da R.D.P. Internacional, in Luxembourg, opened for the singer Rui Veloso in Forum Cap Magellan in Paris and played in “Semana da Comunidade”, an event organized by the European University Institute, in Florence, to celebrate Portugal.

Tuna Camoniana has organized Festival CAMONIANO de Tunas, an important event for the university. Each year, the festival honours an important figure of Portuguese culture, such as actress Beatriz Costa, guitarist Carlos Paredes, fado singer Amália Rodrigues, TV reporter Fernando Pessa, actors Ruy de Carvalho, Eunice Munoz, Raul Solnado, and singers Fernando Tordo and Simone de Oliveira
