STELA BARBAS holds a PhD law by Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa-Portugal and a Master’s degree in Civil Law by the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra. She is professor in graduate, master and doctoral programs in Portugal and abroad since 1992. Associate Professor at UAL.

She is also a lecturer in the PhD programs at the Faculty of Medicine, University of PortoPortugal/Federal Council of Brazilian Medicine, having participated as jury member in oral and written exams for admission to the Center for Judicial Studies (national competition to the Portuguese judiciary – Judiciary and Public Prosecution) on “Family Law”, “Civil Law”, “Cultural, social and economic topics”.

She is also a member of the Ethics Committee of the Department of Social Sciences and Health of the Faculty of Medicine University of Porto; of UAL Scientific andPedagogical Councils; of the Scientific Committee of the Law Department at UAL; of the Portuguese Association of Bioethics; of the Ethics Committee of the Research Center on Psychology; of the Scientific Council of the Research Center on Economic Analysis of Regulation.

Member of the National Organizing Committee of 14th World Conference on Bioethics, Medical Ethics & Health Law, UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. Stela Barbas is a researcher at the Center for Research and Development in Legal Sciences; at the “Recherche sur Le Droit et Technologies de l’Information et des Communications (DTIC),” Partenariat International, Faculté des Sciences Juridiques, Économiques et Sociales de la Universitè-Ibnou Zohr-Agadir (Enseignement Supérieur et Recherche) (Civil Law and Information Technologies); Member of the Research Group of the Federal University of Bahia (BRAZIL)-The Jusfundamental Discourse on the Dignity of the Human Person in Comparative Law – linked to the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq).

She has been a member for three consecutive years of the National Bioethics Prize/UNESCO Chair in Bioethics-National Award in Bioethics. She was official Guest of the Presidency of the Commission on Human Rights to the Brazilian Federal Senate to speak at a Public Hearing on important Legislative Reforms. She has worked in the Presidency of the Portuguese Government as a specialist on drafting of laws in the field of Medical Law. She has supervised around fifty doctoral theses and master dissertations (on Civil Law, Bioethics, Medical Law, Fundamental Rights, Civil Procedural Law, Tax Law, Electoral Law, Criminal Sciences and Philosophy of Law).

She has participated at more than fifty PhD and master’s examination juries (as jury President / jury member or supervisor). She is the author of about one hundred publications. She has prefaced several books and presented scientific papers at more than one hundred conferences, seminars, symposiums, national and international congresses in the fields of Civil, Constitutional, Criminal, Civil Procedure, Insurance, Labor, Criminology, Notarial and Registration law, Medical Law, Bioethics and Philosophy of Law. She is a member of Scientific/Editorial Committees of several Journals.
