Autónoma TECHLAB – Technology Research Centre

Autónoma TechLab – Technology Research Centre – is the research unit of the Sciences and Technologies Department at UAL (DCT).

As laid down in its statutes, Autónoma TechLab “aims to promote and disseminate research, development and scientific, technical and professional training to its members and to third parties within the scope of Sciences and Technologies, particularly in Computer and Electronic Sciences and their complementary and related areas lectured in the studies cycles offered at DCT/UAL.

Its strategy for research, according to the guidelines established by DCT, focuses on:

  • Fostering the number and quality of papers produced by its researchers;
  • Develop Research Projects, especially applied research projects in partnership with other institutions;
  • Integrate external, national and international Projects (FCT, Horizonte 2020, etc.)
  • Participate in other studies, consulting or projects, namely those that can become a source of income;



Autónoma TechLab includes researchers who are DCT lecturers holding multidisciplinary skills in the fields of:

  • Computer Networks / Wireless
  • Machine Learning
  • Image Processing
  • Big Data
  • Internet of Things
  • Geographical Information Systems
  • Information and Knowledge Structuring and Management
  • Information and Communication Technologies for development + education (Health systems, e-business, e-teaching, e-learning)

The Sea, as well as Territory and organizational / corporate environments are potential areas for technological applied research.

Research is being conducted in the following research strands:

  • Signal Processing for Telecommunication Systems
  • Internet of Things
  • Big Data
  • Sea Technology
  • Unmanned vehicles, in particular, drones
  • Geographical Information Systems
  • Information and Communication Technologies for development + education (Health systems, e-business, e-teaching, e-learning)

TechLab researchers are also members of other research units (Instituto de Telecomunicações; Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility, United Kingdom), which fosters research networks.

The research centre benefits from partnerships that the department holds with external institutions, such as the Oceanography and Fisheries Department at the University of Azores, the Office for the Extension of the Continental Shelf and the company YDreams. Students attending the final year of the Bachelor program and those who attend the Master have the opportunity to participate in projects, as is happening currently within the strands “Unmanned vehicles, in particular, drones” and “Sea Technology”.

This research centre, in collaboration with other research centres, UAL Departments (Architecture and Economic and Business Sciences) and national partners, is currently developing a project-initiative in the scope of the project Urban Logistics Cluster Lisbon & Tagus Valley Regiondo Cluster DOROTHY , which includes four regions in Europe: Tuscany (Italy), Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (Portugal), Valencia (Spain) and Oltenia (Romania).
